New tourism record predicted for Spain for the seventh year running

FOREIGN tourist arrivals in Spain are expected to set a new record this summer for the seventh year in succession, according to Industry Minister Reyes Maroto.

The sector is hugely important to the country, accounting for 12 per cent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

Speaking at a press conference, Maroto said Spain would have had 29.6 million international visitors by the end of the summer – half a million more than last year. Only France gets more arrivals each year.

Hand in hand with increases in visitor numbers, Maroto expects to see tourist spending rise to a new record. He is predicting growth of 3.2 per cent between July and September compared to the same period of 2018. This would mean a figure of around €33.9 billion.

By nation the UK is the most important market, accounting for 18.5 million visitors, with 11.4 million Germans arriving. As well as consolidating these markets the government wants to attract new tourists from places such as China.
