Spain could lose out hugely due to Climate Change

A RECENT study by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has warned that potential increases in the global temperature could affect Spain’s industries greatly, particularly in agriculture and construction.

The ILO uses the term Thermal Stress, to describe the difficulties faced by the workers in these sectors when working in extreme heat and without the possibility of shelter from the sun.

The data revealed has come after a 17-year-old boy died after working the fields in the direct sunlight in Cordoba.

The study suggested that productivity will decrease by 2.2 per cent due to increasing temperatures, which in turn translates to an estimated 80 million full time jobs worldwide.

The delegation of these jobs in European countries varies, however Spain is the hardest hit with an estimated equivalent to 7,700 jobs.

The hardest hit sectors will be agriculture and construction, with the agriculture industry making up around 60 per cent of the affected roles. Other industries affected would be garbage collection, emergencies, repair work, transport, tourism and sports, as well as certain forms of industrial work.
