POLICE caught two thieves trying to make a getaway after they targeted warehouses in Almeria city.
Police said the warehouse robberies in Cañada de San Urbano followed the pair’s failed attempt to break into a nearby house while an elderly couple were indoors.
The woman called 091 after she heard voices in the early hours coming from an internal patio accessible from the outside only by climbing over a more than two metre high wall. Three police patrols went to investigate, discovering clear signs someone had tried to unsuccessfully force open the metal bars on the windows and finding a discarded hammer.
While carrying out a search of the area officers came across a man dragging a trolley full of tools and stolen items. He tried to get away, throwing off the cap and scarf he had used to disguise his identity, but officers caught up with him.
A patrol came across a second man hiding in a space between two greenhouses. There were gloves and a balaclava inside the backpack he was carrying.
Police said they believed the two men, both Moroccans in their twenties, had got into four warehouses in all, busting through the doors or breaking the locks.
It turned out an Almeria court had issued a judicial court order for one of the individuals in connection with a vehicle theft, and a second prohibiting him from entering and remaining in Spain. The other individual was found to have violated regulations related to immigration having ignored an obligation to leave the country.
Police have returned all the stolen items they recovered to the owners.
