NEARLY THERE: Turtle returns to its natural habitat Photo credit: Denia town hall
DENIA, Valencia’s Oceanografic and the Generalitat celebrated World Oceans Day by releasing three turtles at the Punta del Raset beach. More than 500 people looked on as the turtles lumbered down the beach back to their natural habitat. The turtles had been hauled to the surface in the nets of local fishing boats but one had to be nursed back to health at the Oceanografic Aquarium in Valencia City after suffered decompression sickness or the bends. Another was recovering from a wound while the third was unharmed but all were able to return to the sea thanks to the cooperation of the professional fishing boats, Denia town hall explained. Many turtles are brought to the surface by trawler nets but others that are found floating near the shore or washed up on local beaches have been affected after eating plastic or becoming entangled in it, municipal sources said. In a bid to cut down on unnecessary use of plastics and to prevent them from entering the sea and wreaking untold damage on marine life, the town hall distributed reusable cloth bags to those present as well as informative leaflets about the wildlife and plant life on Denia’s coast.
