ONE of the region’s most famous, most important and definitely most spectacular events is on this weekend starting today – Alicante’s fire festival, the Hogueras de San Juan.
Hundreds of thousands of people will congregate to see impressive fireworks and a procession of giant effigies made from wood, cardboard and papier maché. They are real works of art in themselves, but they are not long for this world as they will be set on fire to celebrate San Juan (Saint John) on June 24.
The result is a spectacle that has become famous the world over – but those lucky enough to live in this part of Spain just have to go along to enjoy the show.
