Spain on high alert after terror threat rises

SPAIN authorities are on high alert after the country’s terror threat level was raised to ‘severe’.

The UK Foreign Office has reportedly issued the warning that terror attacks in Spain are “likely” after terrorist intelligence monitor SITE revealed the latest propaganda from organisation Al-Muntasir was posted online.

The group has issued three threats to Barcelona in the past weeks and has also warned of possible attacks on areas with large concentrations of people, including popular holiday destinations.

Spanish authorities have issued an extra 40,000 police to key tourism areas who will be stationed at stations, beaches, restaurants and hotels. They will remain there until the end of the season or until the terror level officially drops.

The measures come following another reported threat by terror group ISIS which has warned France of an attack directed at the Notre Dame cathedral in the future. The cathedral is currently under repair after a blaze destroyed the 850-year-old building in April.

The UK gave advice for holiday makers to stay vigilant, stating that “the Spanish authorities take measures to protect visitors, but you should also be vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities”.

Last weekend, Spanish police arrested the alleged leaders of domestic terror group Resistance Galega, Anton Garcia and Asuncion Losada in Vigo.

The pair had reportedly been on the run since 2006. The group’s last attack was in 2014 when a bomb exploded in the Barella town hall in Lugo.
