PAWS-PATAS cattery forced to close in Almeria

DUMPED: Recently abandoned kittens “have created chaos at the cattery”, reported PAWS’ Chrissie Cremore. CREDIT: PAWS

THE PAWS-PATAS cattery has been forced to close until further notice after a bunch of sick kittens were left outside the animal charity’s shelter gates.
PAWS-PATAS reported that the kittens of various ages were dumped at the shelter before the morning shift arrived. The volunteers took them to the quarantine pens for assessment. They appeared to be in reasonable health; just a couple had watery eyes.
The next morning, the volunteer on duty arrived to find one kitten dead and another fighting for its life. By the end of the day six had been lost. One week on, the figure is up to nine deaths, and more are still vulnerable.
PAWS-PATAS said the suspected cause of these sudden, unpleasant deaths is a virulent virus called panleukopenia, similar to the distemper virus in dogs.
“It is the most devastating situation we have ever had at our small cattery and we are so grateful for our dedicated fosterers who thankfully have many of our kittens in their safe care. Without their help, the death toll would have been a lot worse”, PAWS-PATAS’ Chrissie Cremore told the Euro Weekly News.
“We have to appeal to those who are continually leaving large quantities of kittens and cats at the shelter as we have strong suspicions that they are coming from the same source”, Chrissie continued. “Yes, we are a rescue centre, but we simply cannot take in the hundreds, if not thousands, of unwanted and/or sick felines which are living on the streets. And this time your actions have caused great suffering and upset and jeopardised the health of others.”
