Furnish your Spanish home from the UK

BRITISH residents still look to purchase property in Spain despite Brexit and the summer months are often the busiest time for new arrivals be they potential residents or new owners of holiday homes.

It is very easy to get irritated and confused with the number of shops who supply furniture but time is precious and you don’t necessarily want to waste yours traipsing from one shop to another when almost everything can be obtained in a single store online.

Language can often be a barrier so it is always sensible to try to find a supplier where English as well as Spanish is not just spoken but is also understood especially as ‘small print’ in Spain can be quite confusing.

Things to look out for are whether your new items will be delivered to the rooms you want them in or just to the door and if you are getting on a bit. Unless you have a team of weightlifters on hand, moving that bed or sofa upstairs can be a real challenge.

Talking of challenges, don’t forget that many properties in Spain whilst well-appointed can have smaller rooms and narrower flights of stairs than you might be used to in the UK so do make sure that before ordering you have all of the dimensions to hand.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is whether certain items of furniture will need assembly and if so whether the shop where you are purchasing the goods will arrange that either in store or on site as well as taking away any old furniture that you might be replacing.

It can sometimes surprise new property buyers that a number of Spanish owned stores close down for their own summer holidays so that if you are thinking of purchasing furniture in July or August, then you might find that the options are quite limited.

Buying online from the comfort of your home in the UK has a great deal in its favour as you can spend your time perusing what is available and then order what you need for delivery on a day when you are over or if you have friends nearby with keys then they could perhaps be persuaded to open up for you.

By checking the products being offered by stores online you can take your time to discover the full specification of each of the items that you might be interested in and the various options that might be available. This can be particularly helpful in the case of beds, chairs and sofas where you will be able to see details of the upholstery and springs in order to ensure that you are guaranteed a comfortable seat or night’s sleep.

Rather than making a hurried decision in store (which you might come to regret) if you take the time to research exactly what you need then your purchase is far more likely to suit your needs.

Payment should be easier as you can arrange bank transfer, payment by credit card which adds an additional element of protection or even PayPal.

If you plan in advance and know what you are looking for then pre-furnishing your new or refurbishing your old property should be simple.
