More than 500 tremors recorded in Canary Islands in two hours

MORE THAN 500 small earthquakes took place in Tenerife in the space of two hours yesterday (Friday), according to a local geographical institute.

The Canary Islands’ Institute of Volcanology said the tremors were recorded between around 5.10pm and 6.50pm local time. No injuries or damage were reported.

It is the most earthquakes recorded in one event since more than 700 were detected in the space of five hours on October 2 2016.

“The cause of these tremors is probably related to volcanic magma moving in the volcanic-hydro thermal system of Tenerife,” the Institute said.

The tremors, reached a magnitude of 1.8 and took place around 10 kilometres under the Teide National Park, it added.
