A BRITON of 53 died after being swept away by strong currents at El Palmar beach between Tarifa and Cadiz.
He was swimming with his niece when a surfer who saw that they were in difficulties helped the girl to reach the shore before returning for the man.
He brought him back to the beach on his surfboard and a doctor who happened to be present immediately started to perform CPR but was unable to save the man.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and the Guardia Civil are now investigating the circumstances of his death, which initially were not seen as suspicious, sources said.
Although police did not reveal whether he was a resident or tourist, according to the local Spanish media he was holidaying with his family and was said to be a strong swimmer.
