LOTS OF HUGGING: EWN columnists unite.

I WAS so happy to have almost finished my column for this week before going to celebrate with the Euro Weekly team their 20th anniversary.

This week I was going to send it in (nearly) on time!! However you’ll get to read that one hopefully next week, as for now I can only but write a thank you note not just to Michel and Steven for such a lovely party, but to every single member of the EWN to acknowledge their hard work and dedication, day after day, deadline after deadline for 20 years! Very few businesses survive two decades, even less so when dependent upon advertisers. Add to this working in a foreign country, specifically based in six different touristic, coastal areas, which are transitional and fickly markets.

The average business life expectancy in such circumstances is 18 months to two years. So what is their secret? Obviously hard work and determination by Michel and Steven, but the tangible pride exuded by the entire team present at the celebration has to be the key. They are as Surianne wrote for our #UNMS anthem ‘as one.’ (Esteban, we missed you, but happy you’re on your holidays!!!). Mingling with everyone from the team, together with other columnists and advertisers was like meeting long lost family members; a sense of belonging. I got to chat with the people who design the adverts, those who possibly flip out on a Wednesday afternoon when I want to change the image for my column, or worse still, are wanting to know where my column is as the paper is going to print.

The party therefore was also a good opportunity for me to apologise to everyone as well as give them a hug of gratitude. There was lots of hugging going on as this was truly an event that brought together so many of the ‘extended family.’ I have always felt proud to be associated with the Euesdens because in my experience they are dedicated, dare to be different and above all are direct. The fact that they support and encourage many of the people who have been judged or even ostracised by our local community for some reason or another is for me the cherry on the top. It’s always wise to hang out with those who have a ‘GYB’ philosophy, those you know have ‘Got Your Back’ so it’s really nice to know that unlike other publications anywhere in the world that perhaps would jump at the chance to spread juicy gossip, they prefer to encourage and not convict.

It’s undeniably a paper made up for the people by the people; individuals who work as a team but stand out for their singularities. People who care about each other and support each other, sharing a bond that not even all families can enjoy, particularly such extended ones! So congratulations to you all: it’s lovely to know that in some businesses ‘family’ still matters. www.rtvmarbellanow.com www.zerohero.es
