NGO´s study of 50 of the most contaminated port cities found that Barcelona receives the highest rate of pollution from cruise ships.
The Catalans popularity with tourism is the major cause of the pollution as an estimated 105 large liners arrived in the city last year and emitted more than 2.5 times more pollution than the 550 million privately owned cars.
Oddly, Lisbon had more shipping traffic than Barcelona yet less pollution. This was due to the amount of time the large ships were anchored in the cities with Barcelona having considerably longer stays overall.
The Transport & Environment NGO have offered possible solutions to decarbonising the emotions, but want governments to intervene and mandate the shipping industry with the aim of zero emitions.
