Two vans containing over 3,000kg of marijuana has been intercepted as it entered the port of La Bajadilla, Marbella.

The load was seized as it tried to join the N340 late Thursday night and was stopped as part of a larger operation between the Guardia Civil, Policia Local and the Policia National to crack down on the importing of drugs to the country.

During the operation the Guardia Civil made more than a dozen arrests in connection with the load, which has a potential black market street value of several million euros.

A veteran off duty local policeman was also involved in the arrests after hearing intimidating gun shots being fired from the Guardia Civil vehicles. He was on his way home from work in uniform but in his own car when without hesitation he joined to assist in the operation.

According to sources, the traffickers took advantage of the change of shift of port security and Guardia patrol to gain entrance through the fishing port, however once on land they were quickly surprised by the officers making their way onto the N340. When the policemen stopped them, they ran until they were intercepted close by.

The criminals were thought to be an organised group from Cueta.
