Private jet careers off runway at Spanish airport

A PRIVATE jet from Amsterdam ran off the runway when coming in to land at Alicante airport at 2pm this afternoon.

Early reports claimed that the aircraft’s four passengers received minor injuries although Guardia Civil and airports authority AENA later said that only two people were on board and neither was hurt.  It is now believed that a tyre blew out during the landing or possibly the brakes failed.

Safety procedures were put in place immediately, including the closure of the airport, with 20 flights diverted to Valencia, Murcia and Barcelona.  Flights due to take off were also held up but the aircraft was towed away from the runway and airport reopened at 5.40pm.
