Girl, 5, drowns after being swept out to sea on Spain’s Costa Dorada

A five-year-old girl drowned on Spain’s Costa Dorada after she was blown out to sea on an inflatable.

She was on a family holiday from Georgia when tragedy struck at noon yesterday (May 28) on the beach of La Pineda, in the municipality of Vila-seca (Tarragona).

According to the emergency services the little girl was swept out 200 metres from the shore by stong winds and waves.

Local Police, Maritime Rescue and Red Cross were involved in an attempted rescue, but by the time they reached her she had slipped off the inflatable and was already unconscious.

A Red Cross boat took her out of the water and brought her to the port, where medics attempted to resuscitate her for an hour, but to no avail.
