Deadly crossing from North Africa to Spain: total of 248 dead this year

THE Western Mediterranean migration route between North Africa and
Spain is now the second deadliest in the world, according to a UN body.

The UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) found a total
of 159 people have died or disappeared while taking the route this year.
The route between North Africa and Spain came second to the Central
Mediterranean route running from Libya to Europe.

A total of 248 people have died or gone missing on that route so far
this year, according to the IOM’s Missing Migrants report.
The number of deaths and disappearances on the Western Mediterranean
route made up 16 per cent of the 987 total across global routes this
year, the report showed.
