A DUTCH expat has been arrested for allegedly hiring a Mexican hitman to kill his Algerian ex-wife in Spain.
Only identified by police as HHM, he was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Alcañiz after the man’s daughter raised the alarm when he lent her his phone as hers wasn’t working.
She discovered messages where he was allegedly contracting a killer to fly the Atlantic to murder the girl’s mother. The daughter tipped off the intended victim who made a complaint to police.
Investigators say a payment of €2,000 had already been paid to the hitman, who was to get further payments once the woman was dead.
The hitman had allegedly outlined several ways in which to make the killing and was preparing to fly to Spain within the next few days. HHM had made plans for an alibi in which he would visit a shopping mall at the time of the killing and make sure he was taped on security cameras.
The couple have been divorced for a little over a year. They had joint custody of their daughter and the ex-wife paid maintenance to the man.
The detainee has been remanded in custody. He could face between three-and-a-half and seven years for conspiracy to murder.
