FREDDIE STARR’S estranged family will have his body brought back to the UK from Spain, according to reports.

Donna Smith, Starr’s third wife, said the family were ‘doing our bit’ to return his body to England, after it was revealed the celebrity faced a ‘pauper’s funeral’ in Spain.

His carer, Nelly Georgieva, had pleaded for help after she revealed the comedian had died penniless, leaving her to settle his medical bills and unable to afford a Spanish funeral.

Her announcement prompted Spanish funeral makers to offer to take over the arrangements.

Sources say Starr could now be laid to rest next to his mother Hilda in Liverpool.

According to one publication, a source said: “Freddie adored his mum. She was the driving force behind her career by encouraging him to gigs in pubs and clubs.

“Though estranged from his children and former wives, they felt it was only right he was reunited with his mum.”

Starr died last Thursday May 9 at a Costa del Sol apartment, aged 76.
