OUTBREAK: Third baby dies from bacterial infection in Spain

A PREMATURE baby has allegedly died of the same bacterial infection which killed another two in Cataluña.

The baby, who was born at 24 weeks, was admitted to the Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona suffering from Klebisella pneumoniae.

Two further premature infants have shown signs of being affected by the same bacteria, but are not currently showing any signs of illness, according to the Institut Catala de Salut.  Previously, another two babies had died from the strain, which is antibiotic resistant, at the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona.

The Josep Trueta Hospital neonatal unit declared the outbreak to the Girona Department of Health’s Epidemiology Surveillance Service, and has stepped up its bacterial control measures to identify the source of the outbreak and reduce the risk of further infection.
