RECORD BREAKING: More tourists went to Spain this winter than ever before Credit: Shutterstock
THE information was provided by the president of Costa del Sol Tourism, Francisco Salado, who stated that “it has been the best winter” for the Spanish south coastal destinations.
The Costa del Sol has passed its usually quietest part of the year with outstanding results, as it has managed to beat its historic record of holiday makers between the months of November and March.
During that period, 1.94 million people stayed in regulated establishments (hotels, camps, tourist apartments and rural houses), which was 2.6 per cent more than in the same period of the previous year.
The Spanish and the British provided 60 per cent of the tourists. Other countries have a smaller presence, but there have been important increases. The number of Greek tourists increased by 184 per cent, 61 per cent of Czechs, 52 per cent of Austrians, 33 per cent of Japanese and 22 per cent of Russians. Noted also are the 9.3 per cent of Finns, 9.1 per cent of French, 8.8 per cent of Italians, 6.6 per cent of Americans and finally 5.6 per cent for Swedes.
Winter has been very good for the Costa del Sol and there is also a good prospect for summer.
Francisco Salado estimates that 7.3 million tourists may arrive in 2019, the 13 million tourist record could be exceeded for the first time in history.
