ORIHUELA Council has announced a proposed strike by municipal cleaners has been called off.

The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, announced the road cleaning service workers have reached an agreement in the afternoon today, avoiding a strike.

Earlier this week, a meeting took place with representatives of the trade unions as well as by the councillors of Human Resources, Rafael Almagro, and the councillor of Street Cleaning, Damaso Aparicio.

Bascuñana congratulated the parties involved on the agreement reached and for, “the good atmosphere during these weeks of negotiations.”  He also thanked street workers for, “their consideration and understanding.”

The mayor added: “when we arrived at the council there was no budget to invest, no possibility of strengthening the workforce, so it took us time to put the administrative machinery in place to be able to provide the service with the necessary means.”
