Equanimity

STUNNING SUPER YATCH: Equanimity at night. The Beach Club and multiple decks illuminated.

DICTIONARY definition of Equanimity: mental composure, evenness of temper, especially in misfortune.

A stunning super yacht the mega yacht ‘Equanimity’ has been sold. She has had a more adventurous media profile than is usual even for super yachts since she was launched six years ago. A winner of prestigious awards as she emerged from the shipyard and on to the world’s super yacht stage in the summer and autumn of 2014. More recently the mega yacht ‘Equanimity’ has been the more public face of a complex alleged financial fraud. She was seized and arrested by the Malaysian Government while cruising off the Indonesian island of Bali as a part of an asset recovery program. Rumour has swirled about the vessel. Even the cost of her construction is uncertain with estimates running as high as US$250 million. No comment either way has emerged from the builders Oceanco who have maintained a discreet silence.

MY ‘Equanimity’ got off to a flying start, applauded by all. On the 13 September 2014 Oceanco’s stunning new 92m superyacht won the prestigious award for “Best Yacht of the Year over 82m” at the 2014 World Yacht Trophies. An exclusive awards ceremony took place in Cannes at the Carlton Beach Hotel and featured a gala dinner followed by the awards presentation and a spectacular night time parade of yachts cruising along the shoreline.

By 23 September of 2014, ‘Equanimity’ had won an accolade at the respected Monaco Yacht Show and the award for “The Finest New Yacht of the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show”— the Best in Show. The award ceremony took place at the newly completed Norman-Foster designed Yacht Club of Monaco. The director of the Monaco Yacht Show presented Oceanco the award at the show’s opening cocktail reception party attended by industry members, the press and VIP’s.

‘Equanimity’ was the first superyacht unambiguously designed and built to be fully Passenger Yacht Code compliant and can comfortably accommodate 26 guests. While Oceanco’s in-house design team was responsible for the exterior styling and layout, the famed design team at Andrew Winch Designs created Equanimity’s serene Asian-inspired interior. Over the past six years MY ‘Equanimity’ has cruised the seas carrying her crew, owner and passengers in style and luxury. Discreetly, quite unlike her spectacular debut.

A 20 meter swimming pool, helipad and cinema among the amenities as well as a beach club at the stern stuffed with all the toys. Two hand built 10 meter Hodgdon tenders together with two high speed Zodiac ribs to link the vessel to the shore. Along with luxury cabins and accommodation for up to 26 guests as well the 28 crew and hotel staff trained to convey them all in the lap of luxury.

Having been under arrest for many months, now that she has a new owner, she will no doubt swiftly return to what she was destined and built for. To provide a unique environment for the fortunate few. Which is perhaps why the new owners are reported to be Genting Malaysia Berhad of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Genting are operators of luxury resorts and casinos around the globe. A super yacht of this quality will earn her keep as her new owners are reported to have confirmed she will provide them with “a unique and competitive edge”.

The price paid by the new owners of US$126 million is more certain than the cost of building her as the Government of Malaysia is very keen to be transparent. The Malay Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, no less, announcing the sale on the 3 April 2019. I suppose a sense of equanimity at the gaming tables is an essential attribute for high rollers?
