AN elderly woman died after waiting for two and a half hours at the Torrecardenas hospital emergencies department without being seen by a doctor, Spanish press reported.

According to the Voz de Almeria newspaper, the family of 74-year old D.A.R. maintained she had been assessed by nurses at the Almeria city hospital, who classified her condition as a level two priority; level one is assigned to patients where there is a risk of loss of life.

She had been taken to the hospital on Tuesday by ambulance accompanied by personnel from the residence where she was staying after experiencing respiratory problems.

The Andalucia regional government has opened an investigation into the matter. Speaking to press, Junta de Andalucia delegate in Almeria Maribel Sanchez said the aim was to establish “exactly what happened in the process.”

The Popular Party delegate said the Junta “regrets the death” and was “in contact” with the family.

PSOE Socialist Party Almeria deputy Noemi Cruz slammed the delegate for some of her remarks. Cruz accused the delegate of being “irresponsible and profoundly disrespectful” when she declined to give more details to press until professionals had given their opinions and commented “I wasn’t there, and I don’t want to say more until it is known what happened.”

The deputy argued the Junta “should have offered immediate explanations”, insisting the regional administration had instead chosen to “pass the buck.”
