THE rapid action of Palma firefighters averted a potential disaster when a van caught fire on a petrol station forecourt.

The alarm was raised at 8.30 am on Tuesday when a fruit van at the Shell station on Camí de Muntanya, in the Marratxí industrial estate burst into flames.

Although the area is covered by the Mallorca brigade it was Palma firemen who were closer, and they were called in due to the urgency of the situation, with the danger of fire spreading to the petrol station itself causing concern.

Inca firefighters were also called in as backup in case the situation became more serious. However, the Palma brigade rapidly extinguished the engine blaze, and left the scene by 9.15am.
