POLICE officers have arrested seven suspects, several of them British, in connection with an alleged smuggling of thousands of kilos of hashish from Morocco to the Campo de Gibraltar.
Officers with the Guardia Civil, National Police and Tax Agency took part in the operation. Guardia Civil sources said the drugs were destined for further sale on the black market.
The operation saw police board and raid a pleasure boat sailing from North Africa to Spain. A total of 2,992 kilograms of hashish were found on board in 92 packets.
Police said more boats would have been rented to smuggle the drugs into ports across the Costa del Sol.
The logistics and delivery of the drugs once they arrived in Spain were all highly organised, investigators added.
Officers seized a total of €633,335 in cash as well as more than €28,328-worth of pound sterling. Four of the seven suspects have been remanded in custody as the case continues.
