CATALAN pro-independence demonstrators marched on Madrid today to support the nine politicians and activists standing trial in Spain for rebellion and other charges after staging a banned referendum in October 2017.
Organisers had expected around 50,000 protesters in Spain’s capital city, most of them travelling from Cataluña in 500 buses.
A huge banner with the message “self-determination is not a crime” headed the march.
More than 500 officers – including riot police – were deployed to cover the march.
There were reports that several coaches were pelted with stones, shattering the windows, as the protestors left the city.
