PABLO CASADO claims he is the victim of fake news over reports he wants to temporarily protect pregnant immigrants from deportation as long as they give up their baby for adoption.
The leader of the right wing PP says such a move would be “an outrage” and says that the only thing his party wants is to extend to the entire nation a measure that already works in the autonomous communities governed by the PP.
He says this is to ensure immigrant women who already want to give their baby up for adoption can be confident their personal details will not be shared with other departments and used to enforce their deportation. It is not a move, he said, to ‘bribe’ women into put their newborns up for adoption, as has been painted in some reports.
Casado added that the measure is designed to ensure unwanted babies are put up for adoption rather than abandoned by women fearful they could be deported.
He also said that he is committed to defending pregnant women so that, “in any administrative circumstance”, they have official support, whatever they decide.
The PP proposals would mean pregnant women applying to have their baby adopted would be safe from deportation, but only during their pregnancy. Should they come to the notice of the authorities after giving birth then they would still be liable to be expelled.
At present Spanish law prevents pregnant women from being deported if the health of the baby or the mother would be endangered.
The far right VOX party wants all governmental departments to share details to track down illegal immigrants.
