PLANES, TRAINS AND BUSES!: Public transport usage on the up in Spain

AIR transport in Spain grew by 7.4 per cent last year, beating high-speed train use which increased by just 2.5 per cent.

In January 2019, 2.86 million travellers chose air travel compared to 1.57 million who used the AVE, Spain’s high-speed trains.

The figures, published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) showed bus travel increased by 3.8 per cent in January 2019 compared to the same month the previous year, while overall rail use grew by 4.1 per cent, and boats by 3.6 per cent.  More than 417.1 million passengers used public transport in January, 3.9 per cent more than the same time the year before.

Palma’s metro showed the greatest increase at 17.9 per cent, while Barcelona’s bus use also grew the most at 4.5 per cent.
