May said she profoundly regretted the result.

“This is an issue of grave importance for the future of our country,” May said.

The vote is the second on the deal. The first saw May defeated by a margin of 432 to 202.

This week’s vote comes as May travelled to Brussels and agreed a joint framework that would allow Britain initiate procedures to exit the controversial Northern Irish backstop if it were activated.

MPs are now set to vote on whether to sanction a no-deal outcome tomorrow (Wednesday) and whether to delay Britain’s withdrawal from the EU on Thursday.
