BARCELONA BLAZE: Two dead in building fire this morning

TWO people passed away early this morning (Sunday) after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Barcelona.

At 07.30am a group of firefighters were called to the scene after receiving multiple alerts from neighbours of the complex.

The blaze broke out on the fourth floor of an 11 story apartment building; residents of the 44 apartments were reportedly evacuated.

The fire was extinguished around half an hour after the incident occurred.

According to Spanish press, the victims were between 60 and 70 years of age.

Reports also confirmed that several witnesses stated that they had heard an explosion originating from the apartment from which the blaze broke out and proceeded to warn the Barcelona fire brigade.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the head of the Barcelona Firefighter Technical Support Unit, Antonio Cabeza, has stated that the cause of death of the two victims could be due to smoke inhalation as the apartment was completely burned down.

Mr. Cabeza also said that the firefighter force carried out an inspection of the building and confirmed that no further damages had been caused except for the charred apartment.

They will also grant residents permission to gradually return to their homes.
