Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez unveils measures to protect citizens rights in event of ‘disorderly’ Brexit

SPAIN’S Prime Minister has told lawmakers the government will approve measures to cover a no-deal Brexit scenario including protecting the rights of British expatriates.

Pedro Sanchez said the plans also included measures to allow for co-operation between Madrid and London on administration and legal matters, as well as crime.

“The goal of the plan is to preserve the rights of Spanish and British citizens, as well as preserving a normal trade flow and safeguarding Spanish economic interests,” Sanchez said.

“My main goal is to guarantee that Britain’s decision to leave the EU would have the smallest possible impact on people and businesses,” the Prime Minister added.

Sanchez added everything that Madrid and London had agreed in regards to Gibraltar post-Brexit would also stand even if Westminster blocks British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement.

“The deal reached on Gibraltar is the best one possible. Our goals are maintaining the mobility of works and increasing environmental and police co-operation, as well as on tobacco prices,” the Prime Minister said.

Madrid, London and Gibraltar have all agreed to work to combat tobacco smuggling regardless of whether Britain leaves the EU with or without a deal on Friday March 29.

Sanchez was speaking at the last plenary session before Spain’s Cortes Generales dissolves ahead of a snap general election on April 28.
