A BUMPER programme of more than 300 free activities has been put together to mark the Day of the Balearic Islands on Friday, March 1, with free public transport by train and metro.

From Thursday until Sunday, islanders can celebrate the annual holiday by enjoying an array of activities relating to music, sport and gastronomy.

Director General of Institutional Relations, Josep Claverol, unveiled the joint government and Council of Mallorca plans on Monday, and said: “The intention is to combine lots of activities and take them to all of the towns in Mallorca, integrating as many people as possible.”

Passeig del Born, the Parc de la Mar, the Parc de la Feixina and the Hort del Rei will host free events, exhibitions and visits, and many towns across Mallorca will be awash with colour for a weekend of carnivals.

Meanwhile, Son Fusteret is due to open the traditional Fira del Ram tomorrow, with almost 200 booths and attractions that will be in place until April 28.

Children’s Day of the Day of the Balearic Islands will be celebrated in Ses Voltes in Palma on Saturday, and there will be an entire day of play and artistic activities aimed at families.

The public holiday commemorates the day the Balearic Islands’ Statute of Autonomy came into effect on March 1, 1983.

To the island’s’ residents this means unity, solidarity and, of course, fiesta. March 1 is a public holiday in Balearic Islands, and a day off for the general population, when schools and most businesses are closed.
