Nine injured and 250 evacuated following fire in 12-storey apartment block on Spanish holiday island

AN APARTMENT fire broke out yesterday (Sunday) at 9.15am on the fifth floor of the Tanit building in Sant Antoni, Ibiza.

Eight people suffered smoke inhalation, one was injured with second-degree burns and 250 residents were evacuated.

The Guardia Civil was forced to evacuate twelve floors of the apartment building located on the General Balanzat street next to the Passeig de ses Fonts.

Firefighters successfully put out the fire a few hours after it started.

The injured were transferred to nearby hospitals for medical attention, including a 31-year-old man, who lived in the apartment where the fire started, after suffering from severe burns to his foot after trying to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is still unclear as investigations continue.

Sant Antoni’s City Council has informed that local technicians will review the state of the affected floors in order to determine whether it is safe for residents to return to their homes.
