EU Parliament blocks Spanish extreme-right and neo-fascist meeting set for Brussels on Monday

THE head of the European Parliament has blocked an event organised by extreme-right and neo-fascist groups in Brussels.

Antonio Tajani decided today (Thursday) to pull Monday’s event, called The Future of the True Patriotic Forces in Spain for Unity and Freedom. The extreme-right Democracia Nacional party and the neo-fascist Falange organised the event.

Tajani said he made the decision to ensure security and order were maintained and to protect the “dignity” of the European Parliament.

The European Court of Justice ruled previously that European Parliament presidents could take such action to protect the institution.

Democracia Nacional said: “Despite the veto of the European Parliament President of our freedom of expression, pushed by a separatist tatrum, our party will still hold the event in Brussels.

The decision was taken after Spanish MEPs from the leftist Izquierda Unida (IU) and pro-Catalan independence parties wrote to Tajani calling for him to stop it from taking place.

They asked if the head of the parliament was aware extreme rights and neo-fascists had been allowed to hold the event.

MEPs also noted Spain’s Supreme Court jailed Pedro Chaparro, Democracia Nacional’s president, for his part in an attack on the Catalan Blanquerna Cultural Centre in Madrid in 2013.

It comes after Tajani blocked an event where former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont was due to appear citing security concerns.
