BREAKTHROUGH: New leukaemia treatment for children to be offered for first time in Spanish hospital

SPAIN will offer a new and advanced treatment to children suffering from leukaemia.

CAR-T therapy will consist of extracting the patients’ lymphocytes- a type of white blood cell- before genetically modifying them and reintroducing them into the patient to fight tumour cells.

Until now, the treatment had only been available in clinical trials, but Spain will now begin administering the therapy for the first time at between two and four hospitals in Madrid, costing €300,000 per patient.
