ESPECIES de Canarias Facebook page has posted a series of distressing images that show a fisherman walking in the middle of the street with a dead shark hanging from his back.
The man, pictured in Calle of Mogan, has been reported by Especies de Canarias for not only walking around with the dead animal but also for having harpooned the shark.
Also known as an angelfish, the fish belongs to the ‘Squatinidae’ which is the second most threatened shark family in the world.
The Especies de Canarias post, published last Sunday, explained that it ‘was a sad scene, and even more knowing that Canary Islands is the only place in the world where you can see this critically endangered species.’
They also asked the public to call the 112-emergency number if they ever saw images like the ones shared, reporting the incident to the Guardia Civil.
Nevertheless, the Especies the Canarias has requested for negative comments to be refrained towards other fishermen as ‘many of them carry out the activity in a responsible manner’.
