BRITISH Consul for Andalucia and the Canary Islands Charmaine Arbouin addressed British expatriate’s Brexit concerns and doubts at a meeting in Mojacar last week.
Accompanied by the Mayor of Mojacar Rosa Maria Cano, Immigration Council Delegate Lucas Mayo, and Brexpats in Spain representative Richard Hill, the Consul stressed the priority for British expatriates, whatever the final outcome of the ongoing Brexit negotiations, is to legalise their situation in this country.
Lucas Mayo said the main concerns of British citizens living in the municipality post-Brexit are related to access to the health service, pensions, the situation regarding travel between Spain and the UK, and the length of time they will be able to spend in their properties here. There are also concerns about the right to vote in municipal elections.
Consulate experts were also present at the meeting to deal with individual fiscal queries, health system issues, and residence registration.
British expatriates account for approximately half of registered residents in Mojacar and represent 80 per cent of the municipality’s foreign population.
