SPAIN’S AEMET Met Office has reported that weather in the country is forecast to get worse this week.
Snow, rain, wind and coastal phenomena are set to strike Spain, especially the north and the Galician coast, tomorrow (Tuesday).
According to the latest report issued by AEMET, cold air and increased humidity are predicted to hit the country tomorrow.
The arrival of a strong Atlantic front is said to be the cause of worsening weather. It will bring heavy rain to the north of Spain, with snow and strong winds forecast for the north and Mediterranean coast. Storms in the Cantabrian sea could also affect the Mediterranean coast, AEMET said.
Downpours are forecast to last until in the north until Thursday. and to a lesser extent may extend to the rest of the north of the peninsula, in the southeast and the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands and south-eastern Spain are also likely to be affected.
AEMET has predicted that more than 150 litres per square metre will fall in Cantabria, west of the Pyrenees and elsewhere.
The rainfalls will give way to snow that will hit the Cantabrian area and the northwest and northeast.
Snowfall is forecast to be heavy in Cantabria, around the Pyrenees, east of the Basque Country and Navarra.
Winds are forecast to the northwest and east of the country, as well as the Balearic Islands, from Wednesday. Temperatures are also expected to fall.
As for the coastal areas, wind is expected on Wednesday from the northwest, as are of waves up to six metres high in Cantabria and northwest Galicia.
Cataluña and the Balearic Islands are also bracing for wind and rain on their coastlines.
Orange alerts have been issued for the coasts of Almeria , Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, Granada, La Coruña, Lugo, Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, Girona, Melilla, Asturias and Cantabria.
Wind and waves of seven metres in the north and four in the south are expected to hit those areas. The orange alerts run from Wednesday until Thursday.
Most of these areas will be on yellow alert as of tomorrow and will be gradually moving to orange alerts during the week.
Weather conditions are due to improve from Friday 25.
