IRAQ’S Ministry of Defence will send severely wounded soldiers to Alicante for treatment.

Dr Jorge Alio, the professor who heads the Ophthalmology department at Elche’s Miguel Hernandez University (UMH), recently travelled to Baghdad, at the invitation of the country’s Ministry of Defence.

While there he examined soldiers and saw x-rays of their injuries caused by shrapnel and bullets that will require complex surgery and reconstruction work.

He also visited the Light of their eyes children’s hospital, which was founded to cover the basic health and educational needs of parentless children, and with which Dr Alio also plans to collaborate.

Dr Alio is renowned for his work with the use of stem cells to cure advanced thinning of the cornea and is the first Spanish doctor to win the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Life Achievement Honour award.

The British journal, The Ophthalmologist placed him as one of the most influential eye specialists in the world, making him the only Spanish doctor on the 2018 Power List.
