MACAEL is set to save around €79,000 a year on electricity thanks to a provincial government energy efficiency project. Nearly 1,400 conventional street lights will be replaced with LED low consumption lighting. Works will also include incorporating new equipment on control panels, improvements to 75 light support pillars and improving cabling. Provincial Development Deputy Oscar Liria said these kinds of projects are “essential” as they mean major savings on municipal electricity bills and important reductions of energy consumption. The project has a budget of nearly €900,000, and comes under an Institute for Energy Diversification and Conservation-European Regional Development Fund subsidies programme for the projects of local entities taking steps towards a local carbon economy.
