SCAM ALERT: British couple claim to be victims of new motorway car scam in Spain

A BRITISH couple has alleged to Euro Weekly News that they were the victims of an attempted scam whilst driving in north eastern Spain.

Jeff and Bernadette Williams claimed a car sounded its horn at theirs while they were driving from Figueres to Barcelona in Cataluña.

Two men in a new white Volkswagen Golf pointed at their roof box and they pulled into a lay by a few hundred metres up the road, they added.

“The car followed us in but we didn’t think it was anything strange,” Bernadette Williams said.

Mr and Mrs Williams got out of their car and the two men got out of theirs. One of them then came over and began pointing and one of their tyres.

“He crouched down asking me to look underneath the wheel arch. At this time my husband realised there was something wrong and told me to get into the car,” Mrs Williams said.

“Our two German Shepherds had woken up and one man walked by me and said: ‘Dog friendly?’

“I told him she would bite and at that second she started to bark viciously,” sensing something was wrong,” Mrs Williams added.

The two men then got in their car and left, according to the couple.

“We drove off shocked from what had just happened and stunned to think we had almost fallen for the scam,” Mrs Williams said.

The couple said the men were well dressed and that one was bald. They added they did not speak Spanish and they may have spoken Arabic.
