AROUND 300 staff at one of Spain’s biggest airports have staged a month-long walk-out – because it’s too cold to work. Employees with the company Eulen, based at Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas airport, claim they are not being provided with warm enough clothing during ‘extreme weather’ and won’t return to work until January 21. The move spells travel chaos for British holidaymakers and coincides with three days strike action by Ryanair’s cabin crew across Spain (January 8, 10 and 13) over pay and working conditions. The strike at Madrid’s main airport was called by union Alternativa Sindical and affects all security officers who patrol inside and outside the building, as well as the borders. Representatives claim Eulen is contravening ‘the law of prevention of occupational hazards’ by not offering adequate enough clothing for the winter months.
