BARCELONA continues on level four alert due to a potential terrorist attack over the holidays. The Mossos d’Esquadra and the Guardia Urbana are shielding the Rambla, extending security to large vehicles and buses surrounding the area. Other locations such as the Sagrada Familia and the Plaça Catalunya are also under heavy surveillance. The anti-terrorist security in Barcelona was heightened shortly after the US State Department announced a security alert on December 23, telling US citizens to exercise “heightened caution” if traveling to Barcelona, due to a potential terrorist attack. The official warning stated that terrorists could attack at any given time without prior notice, targeting the main tourist locations and public areas during the Christmas and New Year periods. On Christmas Eve, Miquel Buch, the ‘Minister of the Interior’, stated that security levels would be intensified but ruled out increasing the alert level to five. The Mossos d’Esquadra and the Guardia Urbana will continue vehicle inspections during the rest of the holiday season.
