POPULAR football commentator and ex-player Michael Robinson has revealed that he is fighting cancer. Robinson has a malignant melanoma at an advanced stage, and has been flooded with messages of support from social media. He is currently receiving treatment and with characteristic humour joked: “I hoped that the medication would help me to pronounce the Spanish ‘R’s’ better, but no.” Born in Leicester, Robinson made more than 300 appearances for five different clubs in England, including a season with Liverpool. He played the last three years of his career in Spain with Osasuna, and represented the Republic of Ireland at international level. Robinson settled in Spain after retiring in 1989, and has gone on to become a respected football pundit ever since. He hosted the cult television show El dia despues (The day after) and presents a monthly sports magazine series called Informe Robinson (The Robinson Report). In December 2017, Robinson was awarded the Manuel Vazquez Montalban journalism award, sponsored by FC Barcelona.
