TRAIN cancellations today in Spain will affect 84 AVE (Long-Distance) trains and a further 70 Medium-Distance trains. Train operator Renfe has cancelled today (Friday 14) a total of 154 planned train services. 84 AVE services, Renfe’s long distance trains, will not be running today. 70 planned Medium-Distance services have also been halted due to the nation-wide strike. The industrial action is being carried out by members of Renfe’s conductor staff after the union Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) announced workers would be striking between until 11pm tonight. Renfe workers are forced to provide only the minimum of services, as set out by Spain’s Ministry of Development, required on a strike day, hence the large amount of cancellations. As a result, only 21.7 per cent of Renfe’s AVE staff are taking part in today’s industrial action. 34.6 per cent of Renfe’s medium-distance work force are striking today across Spain. These measures have guaranteed the circulation of up to 78% of scheduled AVE trains. 65.35% of regional, medium-distance services will be in operation. CC.OO called for the strike action today due to the “lack of personnel” which “”makes it impossible to provide a quality service with the desirable safety for travelers”.
