PEDRO SANCHEZ has said that Spain has assumed a leadership role on migration while addressing a meeting of world leaders in South America last week.

Spain’s Prime Minister also called for more international co-operation to tackle other global issues including climate change, gender inequality and trade. He was speaking at the G20 summit in the Argentinean capital of Buenos Aires.

“In relation to migration, I believe that Spain has assumed a leadership role. We are talking about a global issue that needs a global response,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez added Spain planned to push for a global agreement to regulate migration and make it more “orderly” at an upcoming summit on the issue in Morocco this month.

The G20 summit had been important because it provided a space for world leaders to meet and talk at a time the global order was being questioned, Sanchez said.

The Prime Minister held talks with the Argentinean Prime Minister Mauricio Macri, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

Sanchez’s comments on migration come as the number of people migrating to the country via the Mediterranean has already broken records.

More than 47,860 migrants arrived in Spain from the start of last year up to October 31, according to official statistics.

The G20 summit saw world leaders gather in the wake of ongoing concerns over the death of Jamal Khashoggi and the alleged involvement of Saudi Arabia.

It also comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin faced criticism after naval personnel from his country captured Ukrainian sailors near Crimea.

  1. I am not sure how accepting 47,000 Migrants and then allowing them to cross into France and make their way to Calais to try to get to central London – – – is Leading the World. May we know how many have been repatriated ?

    • I make you right. This guy is an idiot and anyone who thinks that we don´t need borders and controls on who crosses them is also an idiot. The sooner this lot are no longer running this place the better

  2. For once this hypocrite gets it right. Spain is leading the world in ACCEPTING illegal immigrants. What happens to them afterwards is a bit of a mystery.
