NEW DATA from the Ministry of Health reveals patients wait an average of 93 days for surgery in Spain at public hospitals.
The data also reveals that one in every eight patients have to wait over six months for surgery.
The latest figures examine the waiting list for patients across Spain, they show that on June 30 of this year 584,000 patients were awaiting surgery.
These figures reflect 20,000 less patients than June 30 2017.
The Ministry of Health state that the average waiting time for surgery has been reduced by 11 days in the space of one year.
The ministry adds that the number of patients which experienced waits exceeding six months has shrunk by 15 per cent in a calendar year.
The new report has considered the areas in Spain with the best resident to waiting list ratios.
Basque Country tops this list with a ratio of 8.02 people awaiting surgery for every 100,000 residents.
Madrid and Andalucia also fare very well, registering 8.05 and 8.15 respectively when the ratio of waiting list patients to 100,000 residents was calculated.
Cataluña performed worst in Spain for the waiting time to residents ratio, registering 21.44 patients to every 100,000 residents.
Extramadura and Murcia also registered disappointing scores, registering 19.97 and 18.5 respectively.
Waiting times in each area were also compared.
Madrid and La Rioja top the list with an average of 47 days.
The Basque Country follows closely with a 48-day average waiting time.
Below the national average for waiting times are also Galicia (60 days), Navarra (62 days), Asturias (63 days), Castilla y León (65 days), Cantabria (71 days), Balearic Islands (72 days), Andalucia and Valencian Community (73 days), Aragón (80 days) and Murcia (82 days).
The areas which performed worst when average waiting time was considered were the Canary Islands, 147 days average wait, Castilla La-Mancha, 137 days average wait, and Cataluña, 132 days wait on average for surgery.
The waiting time to see a specialist in Spain is now 57 days on Average, a day less than the average for 2017.
