THE websites of Spain’s Attorney General’s Office and a far-right political party went offline the same day prosecutors announced sentencing requests for Catalan leaders charged over last year’s independence vote. A pro-Catalan group known as Hackers Per La Republicana (Hackers for the Republic) appeared to claim responsibility for the strike last Friday. “Although they have different names, they are the same. Prosecutors and Vox are united against the democratic freedom of the people. We add another one to the list. Tango-Down! We await your complaint,” the group said on Twitter. Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right Vox party whose website was also attacked, said on the social network: “The attack on the Vox website by the coup plotters is excellent news that shows to the eyes of millions of Spaniards they are fighting against a separatist coup. The dogs of Torra and Puigdemont do not frighten us.” The Attorney General’s Office confirmed their website had gone down and that technicians were working to get it back online. They did not give any further details about the incident.
