FIREFIGHTERS were called out to deal with an incident after a car developed an engine fault and started belching out clouds of thick smoke in a major Costa del Sol road tunnel. The incident happened in the Churriana tunnel on the A-7 at km 228 near Malaga and brought traffic to a standstill causing a long tailback. Emergency services were notified but drivers trapped in the tunnel claim they weren’t told what to do. One took to Twitter saying: “Today in the tunnel of Churriana direction Torremolinos there has been a fire. “We call @Emergencias112 and report the fire but no one tells us we should do. “The tunnel has started to fill with smoke we stopped the engines and we didn’t know if we were going to end up suffocating.” The tunnels are fitted with smoke extraction devices but it is not immediately clear if they worked as they should. In a separate incident two people were injured in a head-on crash at kilometre 27 on the A-355 in Ojen, near Marbella, yesterday (Thursday).

El túnel se ha empezado a llenar de humo hemos parado los motores y no sabíamos si ibamos a terminar asfixiados. pic.twitter.com/ecdrhVu2Ea — 🕷️ (@thendoftheheart) October 31, 2018
