At least one dead and eleven injured in hotel floor and scaffolding collapse in Spain

ONE PERSON has died and emergency services are working to free two people trapped under rubble after part of the Ritz hotel in Madrid collapsed this afternoon (Tuesday).
Eleven people have also been injured after reports suggested that a section of the sixth floor plunged to the first, taking with it a section of scaffolding.
The luxury five-star city centre hotel is located in the Plaza de la Lealtad is currently undergoing refurbishment works which are due to be completed in 2019. The works will provide the hotel with a spa and new common spaces, as well as an appreciable improvement of the services and quality of the rooms and suites, including the creation of a new Royal Suite.
The hotel’s grand opening on 2 October 1910 was officiated by King Alfonso XIII. It was one of the first buildings in Madrid that used reinforced concrete in its construction.
The Hotel Ritz Madrid is managed by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and located in Madrid’s “Golden Triangle” of culture. It is located directly opposite the Museo del Prado and close by other major galleries including the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.
